Capital home to sports dot-com debut

BRITSPORT.COM, the Edinburgh internet start-up, hopes to targetthe UK's 16.5 million sports players with the launch this week ofits online sports news and results portal, the British SportsNetwork.

With 23 news channels covering sports from basketball to icehockey, the service will deliver information in text, audio andvideo formats.

Online sportswear retailing will follow soon and the businessalso plans to offer services over internet-enabled WAP (wirelessapplication protocol) mobile phones.

Britsport.com was founded with GBP 500,000 of seedcorn funding byRob Hooton, the Scottish 800 metres champion, and an internetentrepreneur, John Paul Anderson.

The management is led by Colin Taggart, the Belfast-bornpublisher who founded the national publication Student Pages, whichwas sold in 1997 to Associated Newspapers, the Daily Mail publisher.

Mr Taggart said the company was offering its customers andpartners a community of sporting excellence with unparalleled accessto news and results.

He said: "What sets Britsport.com apart is that, while existingsports portals are fixated by top-flight football, rugby and horse-racing, we aim to give every sport the coverage and service itdeserves."

The e-business has secured partnerships with more than 20national sports organisations, and says it is signing more on adaily basis.

It is also developing e-commerce links with major retailers whowill supply specialist sports equipment via its website.

Britsport.com is Scotland's first major venture-backed "dot-com", funded by the Scottish Equity Partnership, the venture capitalarm of Scottish Enterprise.

The company's advisers are Grant Thornton International.
